A2 Practice Documentary

I was told that I will be making a documentary for my A2 coursework. To help me create a practice documentary, I had to watch other examples to help me understand the codes and conventions of documentaries. This was the first documentary I watched:

The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special [Full, Part 1/5]

This film was created to help document the television cartoon 'The Simpsons' 20th Anniversary. The documentary begins with a man making diagetic piano music and then a large band with several instruments. This imediately gave me the idea that it is ok to have diagetic music in our documentary as long as the source of it is clear. Soon after, the presenter walking up to the camera explaining his opening expectations. This is another thing that I could be doing in my documentary. A noticable convention that they have adopted is to have the interviewee's name appear on the screen when they start talking. Their title appears below them on the side of the screen they are sat at; either the left or the right. All of this is in time to a very short sound bite. The text appears in a white 'chalkboard' font with their name written above how they are related to the topic of the documentary.

There is a still image in the background of the documentary of many of The Simpsons' characters. This helps the audience to keep psychcologically in touch with what the documentary is talking about. There isn't any music playing in the background whilst the interviewee is answering questions except at the beginning of the documentary. Another noticable convention is that the audience never hears the interviewer asking the questions. This is a convention that I must strictly keep to. This documentary also has a noticable lighting code. Non-Naturalistic lights are beamed towards one side of the interviewee and cover the majority of their face. Their are some uses of naturalistic light, for example when one man is sat near a window and some of the day light shines through onto his face. Naturalistic light was seen outdoors either when the presenter was talking or on a few occasions in the interviews.
